An article from the Guardian about self checkout: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/dec/16/self-checkout-us-retail-walmart
Similar to Dan Gross' paper on customer dialing and @jbessen 's famous ATM example.
The article looks at aggregate count of cashier jobs and says the machines aren't changing much, but I wonder if that obscures restorting.
Are there stores that would have closed that didn't or more stores with fewer cashiers per store?
Economists and Strategy folks can add insight here
@vb @jbessen I went through the local Costco's self-checkout yesterday at a very busy holiday period. The line moved very fast, the monitors (2 for 6 stations) were cheerful and helpful. The customers clearly preferred it. I will talk to the staff next time they are there. BTW Costco staff are famously well-paid with good benefits, different from the Walmart example in the Guardian article.
@DolanEcon @vb As I write in The New Goliaths, the barcode scanner significantly reduced the labor required of cashiers at checkout, but the aggregate number of cashiers increased as scanners were adopted. Prob. growth in outlets
